[livejournal.com profile] thanatos_kalos asked:

1. What's your favourite Greek word?

Tough call. I've got a list of words that annoy me no end. Actually, on a bad day, my favorite may be συχτήρι - "sikhtiri", which I think is stolen from the Turkish for, roughly, FFS.

2. Is there a particular character on any telly series that you feel is almost exactly like you?

Me in my earlier awkward days? Maybe Wesley Crusher on a really bad day. Me today? No clue at all.

3. If you could cross over any 2 series, what would they be? What would happen?

Ever since I finished The Scarab, I sometimes think there's a little voice inside me saying don't push your luck. But recently, I keep hearing in the back of my head: "Okay ... let's go steal us a time machine."

4. Why did you decide to go into law?

Because I couldn't hack physics and engineering, and because I found studying people and society more interesting, and law is, at its base, the study of how human interaction gets put into a framework, I figure.

5. Puppies or kittens?

Kittens. I think I'm more psychologically attuned to them. Pity I'm allergic.

• Leave me a comment saying "Resistance is Futile."
• I'll respond by asking you five questions so I can satisfy my curiosity
• Update your journal with the answers to the questions
• Include this explanation in the post and offer to ask other people questions (I'll also answer more, if asked)

The questions:

1. What do you think has been your greatest achievement in life?
Depends on how you define "achievement," I suppose. My work on the ambulance crew, way back when, might qualify for the effect it had on others, though that was a small-scale thing. Then again, there's getting through law school and passing the New York bar, which even here in Greece, is recognized as something really damned difficult to accomplish.

2. I've offered you the chance to replace one major US government figure. Who is it, and why?
Antonin Scalia. I know that he's intelligent, but some of the causes to which he brings that intellect to bear, frankly, scare me. And he may be influencing the course of American law for decades to come.

3. What do you find was the most surprising thing about moving to Greece?
Oddly, I'd have to say the traffic lights. Especially the walk/don't-walk signs which go green for maybe three seconds, leaving you halfway across the road when they go red, even if you start crossing the moment they go green. It seems to reinforce an attitude I see generally, that treats the rules as inconveniences to be evaded whenever possible.

4. Pirates or ninjas?
Ninjas. You can still be honorable.

5. Person (living or dead) you'd most like to kick in the shins.
Living, at the moment, perhaps Robert Mugabe, for putting power politics and ideology ahead of a genuine severe crisis that requires solutions that don't seem to be within his toolbox. Dead? I'd be at it until my own legs fell off.

For the heck of it, I figured I might as well engage in the practice I've seen referred to as "Friday cat blogging".

Near Pangrati and Metz, Athens.

Wonder how long I can keep this up? And is anyone else game to join in?

Oops. Missed a few days there. Can I get a mulligan and call this Day Five?

- One month ago today, I walked out the gates of the army base in Messologi, free and clear, never to return in any military capacity.

- Thought I was late to work today, but when I got to the office I share with two co-workers, the lights were out. So while I should have been in motion sooner, I wasn't that late if I had to turn on the lights in the office.

Yesterday was Day 4.

THE HAPPINESS MEME
Rules: For eight days you have to post something that made you happy that day. Tag eight people to do the same.

Found a decent, affordable, conveniently-sized GPS receiver on Amazon UK.

No major anxieties at work.

Managed to avoid yesterday evening's protest, which started the chanting as soon as they got off the train at the Syntagma metro stop, right as I got on.

I seem to be doing these things on the day after a lot.

From yesterday, Day 3 of the meme:

THE HAPPINESS MEME
Rules: For eight days you have to post something that made you happy that day. Tag eight people to do the same.

My Pocket PC was revived. Turns out that it needed to be charged - although I'm not sure why that was the case, as for some reason it went from fully charged to fully discharged in the blink of an eye. Oh, and:
1) I didn't lose any data.
2) Because it got reset to factory defaults, it seems to be working more smoothly than before.

Go fig.

Still got four more people to tag. Gimme a bit on that, I'll get to it before the meme's done.

THE HAPPINESS MEME
Rules: For eight days you have to post something that made you happy that day. Tag eight people to do the same.

Tags are going to trickle out, I suppose. Let's start: hm. [livejournal.com profile] thanatos_kalas, [livejournal.com profile] neonhummingbird, [livejournal.com profile] havocthecat, [livejournal.com profile] diannelamerc. More as I think of them, or as people thwap me because they've already been tagged.

Oh, and forgot to mention I was tagged by [livejournal.com profile] weirdweb.

Yesterday was a bit stressful, but I did have a couple of things that qualified:

1) Finally saw the oath-taking and the inaugural speech. Found a nice quote in a blog comment: "Gotta tell ya, living in a universe that makes sense feels really weird. Good weird, but weird."

2) My contact lenses came out last night without difficulty. This is a notable event.

3) I'm gainfully employed as an attorney. Alberto Gonzales is not. I make it a rule not to be happy at the misfortune of others, and to have empathy for those who find themselves in situations I've been in, but I'm only human. Is it okay for me to feel a little schadenfreude in this case?

Gimme a day or two to round up tags.

And as far as something that made me happy: Whiteboard Kabuki Theatre. Don't know why, but it gave me a giggle fit.

Pretty much a blah day otherwise.

When you see this, post in your own journal with your favorite quote from The Princess Bride.

"You just fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous is: never get involved in a land war in Asia, but only slightly behind that is: Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line! Ha ha ha ha ha! Ha ha ha! Ha ha! Ha-" *thud*

1) Take a picture of yourself right now.
2) don't change your clothes, don't fix your hair...just take a picture.
3) post that picture with NO editing.
4) post these instructions with your picture.

For what it's worth. Bear in mind that I'm at the end of my day, not the beginning.

You are in a mall when the zombies attack. You have:
1. one weapon.
2. one song blasting on the speakers.
3. one famous person to fight alongside you.

Weapon can be real or fictional; you may assume endless ammo if applicable. Person can be real or fictional.

1. I'd take Old Painless, from Predator. Messy and bulky, but against zombies, there's no such thing as overkill; there's only "open fire".

2. "Duel of the Fates".

3. My first thought was Audie Murphy, my second was Alvin York, but thinking hard, I'd have to say Zoe Alleyne Washburne. No stupid risks, no heroics, but no backing down either, and I'd know for sure my back was covered.

List:
1. Five bands/singers you loved.
2. Five songs you loved.
3. Five TV shows you watched.
4. Five movies you were obsessed with.
5. Five people you want to answer this, too.

Saw it late, so the answers will be short, I'm afraid. )

Don't have much in the way of pithy explanations for some of these, I'm afraid. Been a busy day.

Coming from all corners, apparently:

1. Go to the Wikipedia home page and click random article. That is your band's name.
2. Click random article again; that is your album name.
3. Click random article 15 more times; those are the tracks on your album.

My album )

Somehow, I think I ended up with a rap band.

It's actually not a proper haiku, unless either "there's" is read as "there is", or "special" is pronounced with three syllables.

Here it is, though:
