Double take

OK, so before I can even fill out an application to take this job in Athens, I've got to already have a contract with the firm? A contract which, if the bureaucrats don't do their job, I can't fulfill?

Oh, and if by the way, if I don't have the right paperwork, someone else could swoop in and grab the application meant for me. Which would leave me straight out of luck.

I need to hit my head against something. The building across the street's got a brick wall; I'll be back in a bit.

So, I'm tending more towards taking the internship in Athens. My cousin-in-law has good connections in New York, and most of the work is being done in English - I know enough Greek to survive on the streets, but not to conduct legal business.

My brain is huddling in a corner going bibble-bibble-bibble at the concept, though...

Interview went ... well, it went. They say they should have a decision by July.

It was less of an interview, more of a test, actually. The interviewer slid over a sample "intake form", what someone would file with the Commission on Human Rights if there was a question of discrimination or harassment in the workplace, and asked me what I would do with the case. I stumbled some, didn't ask all the right questions; felt like taking the New Jersey Bar all over again. (Pop quiz: someone comes to you complaining of A, B, and C. What do you do? What do you do?)

and yeah, for the record, I failed the New Jersey Bar. Badly. That's part of why I decided to concentrate on New York.

I just felt ... off. Like I stumbled coming out of the gate.

Job hunt

Found an opening at the Staten Island DA's office yesterday, and sent in a cover letter and resume.

Computer crashed overnight last night; when I started it up this morning, Skype pinged to tell me that I had voicemail; the voicemail tells me that there's a potential job offer "off the beaten path". When I call to follow up, I learn that the job's not lawyering per se, but a recruiting job for a firm, paying what sounds like quite a substantial salary. Waiting to hear back from them.

If I had my choice, I'd take the DA's position; but earning money isn't too bad, either.

Boatload of mail in the little in-box today, including one from the Legal Aid Society - an outfit that I was under the impression would be always short of lawyers.

Rejection letter.

Go fig.

Back to the grind.
