I take heart that it wasn't until Airplane - until he was over 50 - that he started doing his thing the way he wanted. Apparently, until then, the serious roles that had made his career were his idea of "playing against type", when he really wanted to be funny on the screen.

Laughter's important. And I think it's safe to say the world's a better place for his having walked it a while.

If I were half as funny as Mr. Nielsen was half of the time, it might have been.

Except that we weren't supposed to call him Shirley, if I recall.
