Emerging from blackout
Feb. 24th, 2010 10:18 amGeneral strike in Greece today. Trade unions protesting against government austerity measures meant to close the country's budget deficit.
The disruption is going to be ... severe. The trains aren't running, only one line of the metro is running, and that only for a few hours, all the banks and government offices are closed, all the museums are closed, buses are restricted, the trolley-buses are completely shut down.
Oh, and the airports. Closed down completely, no flights in or out of the country, thanks to air traffic controllers also going on strike. (My mother was visiting for a couple of weeks, and was scheduled to return to New York today. Let's just say ... that plan hit a snag.)
I'm just hoping things don't turn violent. The office (open today) is right in the middle of the crisis zone for such things.
