bktheirregularApparently, the Metropolitan Baseball Club of New York went through several nicknames in 1961. They tried "Boros" (for Five Boroughs, get it?) and "Rebels," and "Avengers."
Charley Steiner, Yankees radio commentator, on that last:
"The Avengers? What, did they have Emma Peel playing third base?"
Good thing the team settled on "Mets," huh?
