Back to the grind

bktheirregularSettling back in at the office. Had to clear something like five hundred messages on the internal communications system that had accumulated in the last two months; poor design in the program kept on bumping me back to the top of the in-box.
Lots of other people were coming back from vacation, though they hadn't been gone for two months. So things are a little slow, still.
On the other hand, it's nice to be in a place where the painfully stupid get weeded out before they reach the front door. (One of my teachers in high school used to say there's a fundamental difference between "dumb" and "stupid"; dumb is when you can't be expected to know any better, while stupid is when you should know better.) And it's nice to know that when work comes that needs doing, it'll be work for a purpose.
Came back to the office this morning, and my desk was much the way I'd left it; a couple of law books had been left on the desk by someone, but that's not a problem - people sometimes need the space, and my desk is right by a bookcase, so it's a natural place to drop books or files for a bit. My files were where I'd left them, as was the stadium cup from the last game I saw at the old Yankee Stadium.
(It's not so much to mark my territory - saying "this place is mine" - as to sort of proclaim my identity - "this is me".)
The routine will return in time. In this troubled climate, I'm glad I had a job to go back to.
