Reading mechanics
Oct. 19th, 2007 12:54 pmI've been told in the past that I'm an unnaturally fast reader; I noticed this the day before yesterday, when I got back from work, checked one of my email accounts, and noted that the latest Discworld book was available for sale in e-book form.
I'd been looking forward to reading it, so I bought it.
And by midnight that same night, I'd finished it.
Then yesterday, I was asked to read several legal documents out loud to a colleague, so she could check the accuracy of a Greek translation and make corrections as needed. I noted that as I was reading out loud, I was going through what felt like a different mental ... mechanic, I suppose you'd say. Normally, when I'm reading, I see the words, but I don't hear the words. I recognize visual patterns, and interpret them. (This makes reading somewhat of a non-linear experience for me, as I'll often go back and forth through a book a number of times to sharpen the picture that's been built up, as it were.)
So, question to anyone out there. How do you experience reading? Do you see the patterns visually? Do you hear a voice in your head, narrating what you're reading? Is it something else entirely?
