Talked with the family in New York - my mom spoke with a friend back here, so the scuttlebutt just ping-ponged across the Atlantic.

Apparently the latest gossip about the wildfires in Greece is that they were set off by the Americans.

According to the same gossip, the reasoning behind that is that the Americans are angry with the Greek government for entering into ... I think it was trade agreements with Russia, maybe a pipeline deal, so apparently the CIA set the fires to get the place ready for the Americans to invade.

Used to be, my first thought would be that the United States government wasn't that crazy/stupid/petty/evil. Unfortunately, the evidence of the past six years kind of cuts the ground out from under all four of those arguments.

No, my response these days is basically: "We're gonna invade? Using what for an army?"

Sad, isn't it? My homeland is accused of perpetrating an act of phenomenal evil, in preparation for an act of even more phenomenal evil, and my argument isn't that they wouldn't do that, but that they can't?
