Fires haven't had any direct effect on me. Got burned Saturday, but that was from being out on a beach and forgetting sunscreen.

Back at work. Mind turning into mush trying to translate legal documents from the Greek. Slamming into the limits of my language skills, and coming to a determination that when my translation circuits are working, my intelligence levels are best measured not with an IQ test, but with a subsurface sonar apparatus.

Wishing you espresso, which I always found helpful when translating Greek. (Classical, but the prof let us bring breakfast as the class was far too early in winter -- they hadn't plowed the walks yet.)

Thanks! The job's done now, anyway, and espresso probably would only have made me bang my head against my desk much more rapidly.

A Biblical scholar in the class with me then (he's a scholar now) was taking Hebrew at the same time, and had trouble confusing his gimels and gammas, and not dotting his iotas.

I was thinking about you yesterday while watching the news of the fires. How many people have been arrested for setting fires now? Greece is a country of pyromaniacs! Stay safe.

Seven arrests from what I've read, but it sounds like it's a combination of developers accused of trying to clear land for building (there's no forest registry in Greece, apparently) and just plain bone-stupid carelessness. Plus which, the summer we've had here has turned the forests into one enormous tinderbox.

I should be OK. I'm a stone's throw from the British embassy, three throws from the US embassy (which is depressingly reminiscent of a fortress, by the way), and two throws from the Greek parliament building. If a mass evacuation of the national capital isn't on the evening news, then I'm probably safe.
