Realization
Apr. 16th, 2007 02:29 pmAt the moment, my job seems much like that of a left-handed bullpen specialist.
Random rambling aside:
For those who don't know baseball, that's a member of the pitching staff whose job is to be ready at almost any time to pitch to a left-handed batter, and then go back to the bench for the rest of the game.
Because of the asymmetrical nature of the game of baseball, left-handed batters have advantages over right-handed batters, enough that often a natural right-handed person will learn to bat left-handed. A left-handed pitcher bears a certain advantage when pitching to a left-handed batter, because of the mechanics of the standard pitching motion, and left-handed pitchers are even more of a precious commodity because left-handed people are a minority in general.
(Heh - there's even a Wikipedia article on left-handed specialists.)
Anyway, it seems like a lot of time has gone by with me waiting for things to come up where my talents, such as they are, would be useful. Accounts for about half my time here, I'd guess, with the other half being busy crazy-making time. It's a shame that the workload can't be slightly more evenly spaced out.
In forty-eight hours, I'm airborne back to New York City.
Coming back home.
