On DSL

Open question for anyone out there who's using DSL. What sort of equipment do you have to make the connection? I know there's something or other that plugs into the phone line, but beyond that, I walk among the clueless.

(My only hands-on experience with Internet to date has been through dialup, cable modems, and LANs provided by others; the only broadband option in Athens is DSL.)

They will usually provide you with filters to place on all your phone lines, and a DSL modem that plugs into the filter with a special cable. Then it's a standard Ethernet cable from the modem to your computer.

*points up* What he said. If you've got an Ethernet card, you're good, and they should give you a ton of the little DSL filters to plug your regular phone(s) into. The ones I got were about the size of a rubber eraser and you could just plug the phone into them and plug the other end into the phone jack.

The only difference I noticed between DSL and cable was that downloading multiple torrents slowed down everything else - but then again, I didn't download torrents that much until after I got DSL so maybe that doesn't really apply.
