I was going to make a long, thoughtful post on the nature of habeas corpus - the concept that a government is obliged to make an accounting for every person they hold in custody, and justify every incarceration to an independent authority, to protect ordinary citizens against being arbitrarily classified as "enemies of the state" and disappeared with no recourse - that the government must be made to answer for every prisoner: who are they, what has happened to them, where are they, when can they leave, why are they prisoners?

Come to think of it, that was most of my point, stripped of my constant sense of dread about what happens when a governemnt is no longer obliged to answer those questions.

But then I was reminded that [livejournal.com profile] diannelamerc is having a birthday today.

So happy birthday!
