Ever hear of U.S. Cellular Field?

No?

Good. 'Cos its real name is Comiskey Park.

Yeah, I know, it's not the original Comiskey Park, but some things should not be tampered with. They named the new place Comiskey Park for a reason - doesn't it kind of do a dishonor to Comiskey to take his name away from the place?

Plus, let's not forget the other great naming choices around the country. Network Associates Coliseum? What the heck is that? (It's in Oakland.) 3Com Stadium? Call it Candlestick and leave the corporate synergy at the front gate. Enron Field? Making jokes about that ... well, it feels a bit like dynamite fishing.

OK, New York (more specifically New Jersey) has also fallen prey to that. The Continental Airlines Arena was once named for former governor Brendan Byrne. Apparently nobody asked him if it was OK to take his name off the place. Then again, he didn't pay a bazillion dollars to put his name on it.

But aside from that. Shea Stadium, for the guy who helped bring the Mets to New York. Giants Stadium ... well, self-explanatory. Nassau Coliseum? Well, I'm not sure about whether a corporate sponsor would want to be associated with it ... I'm not sure, but I remember hearing not-so-good things. Madison Square Garden ... well, that name's pretty much classic.

And then, of course, the House that Ruth Built. Which is the only other name that edifice needs.

If someone comes along wanting to rename Yankee Stadium for some soulless corporate entity, there will be torches burning in the streets...
