Thirty Things Meme
1. If you had to choose an alias, what would it be?
Depends on the reasons. If I needed to hide, David Brown; nice bland name. If I had to establish a new me, I suppose Ethan Cole. Don't quite know why.
2. Where were you on 9/11?
I was working at the police academy and heard my office-mate reacting to her husband on the phone, something about a plane hitting the Twin Towers. I thought they were talking about a light plane, and remembered the story of the bomber that collided with the Empire State Building in World War 2. I called my brother, who freaked out when he saw the coverage at home ... then we turned on the radio to the news station ... then the reports of the second plane ... the dateline from the Pentagon, and the sinking feeling that a war had just begun ... then the choked exclamation from WCBS that the first tower had fallen....
There were two people I needed to get in touch with, for my own peace of mind. One was in Jersey and safe. The other worked on Wall Street. I couldn't reach her. The relief the next day when I learned she was safe was a physical weight off my chest.
I spent half of 9/11 in a meeting with a representative of the Department of Justice, who was determining future funding for the grant project I was part of (9/11 was largely responsible for my being laid off, as vast sums of money were diverted from things like community policing to terror preparedness, and, of course, tax cuts for the rich and sweetheart deals for Halliburton and Bechtel, not to mention the war on Iraq); the afternoon was spent calling chiefs of police to tell them a seminar being held for them the next day was postponed, which turned out to be futile, because most chiefs were too busy putting their departments on alert anyway...
3. What is your ideal vacation?
There's this island in the western Cyclades...
4. How many first cousins do you have?
Six. Two on my father's side, four on my mother's.
5. How do you take your pizza?
Several ways, from cheese to pepperoni to sausage to peppers. Sometimes onions; sometimes other things. No mushrooms if I can help it, and I do not consider pineapple to be a pizza topping.
6. If you could be fluent in any foreign language (that you are not already) what would it be?
I'm only partly fluent in Greek, so I'd choose that first. After that, French or German, I suppose.
7. What is your favorite website?
Oy. I've got a hundred bookmarks. At the moment, maybe LJ just because it's this smorgasbord.
8. If you could experience another era of history, which would it be?
I wish I could have experienced the moment when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon.
9. What is your favorite genre of movies?
Back when I was actually watching movies regularly, it was sci-fi.
10. If you could have any one superpower, what would it be?
Turning invisible, maybe.
11. Can you whistle?
*tries riff on Sweet Georgia Brown* Yes.
12. If you could be any animal for a day, what would it be?
A falcon, I suppose.
13. Who is your favorite fictional character?
*brainfreeze*
14. Star Wars or Star Trek?
Until George Lucas gets a beta reader worth having, Star Trek.
15. What is your favorite beverage?
Coca-Cola Classic.
16. What brand of toothpaste do you use?
Crest, Aqua-Fresh, Colgate. At random.
17. What is your favorite professional sports team?
The New York Yankees.
18. Are you "indoorsy" or "outdoorsy"?
I suppose a little more indoorsy. I try to do better than that.
19. What is your earliest childhood memory?
Nightmares about getting sucked into the apartment one floor above me, from before I was one year old.
20. If you could play any musical instrument, what would it be?
Guitar, I suppose. I tried piano, and I was an okay drummer.
21. What's your favorite accent?
BBC English, I suppose.
22. When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Astronaut. That's pretty common. Though I did go to the Space Camp once.
23. Are you a dog person or a cat person?
Mentally, cat person, I think. Though I'm allergic to cats, but not dogs.
24. If they were making a movie or TV show of your life, who would you choose to play you?
A couple of people once told me I resembled Wil Wheaton, so ... that'd work, I suppose.
25. What is your favorite element (earth, fire, water or air)?
Water.
26. If you could compete in any event in the Olympics (summer or winter) what would it be?
If I had the skills? Downhill or biathlon. Otherwise? Baseball. (I know it won't happen, but I think my mother would make a great color commentator for the Greek networks' broadcast of Olympic baseball...)
27. What is your favorite Sunday comic strip?
Toss-up between Dilbert and Tank McNamara.
28. What kind of music do you listen to?
Some soundtracks, some classical, some classic rock 'n roll.
29. What is your favorite breakfast cereal?
Cornflakes always struck my fancy. Though I'm also good with Grape Nuts.
30. What is your worst habit?
I procrastinate, and when I get stressed, I tend to shut down mentally if things are going wrong.
'Night, all.
Close entry.
