I turn on the laptop to check my mail before collapsing, and someone pings me with an IM, saying "I notice you don't do Buffy fanfic anymore."

Me: "What?"

Them: "Buffy Fanfiction."

Me (while pondering whether to give this person a subscription to the news-magazine Duh): "That part I understood. What I didn't understand was the 'not writing' part."

Turns out this person noticed that my last fic was Firefly and apparently assumed I was through with the Buffy fandom. Well, I'm not. Done with the fandom, that is. But for cryin' out loud, am I a machine? People want to see me write a particular something, why don't they pick up a pen and paper, or boot up the word processor and start typing what they want me to write, you know, actually do the creative thing?

Aagh. *pounding head against copy of The Hitchhiker's Quartet*

It's gratifying to see feedback. It's wonderful to know people read and like one's work. But I don't write to satisfy my adoring fans.

< insert snarky comment about how BK doesn't have any adoring fans >

It's one thing to be pressured to write something for a class assignment, or for work. It's another to be pressured to write fanfic. Writers of fanfic have responsibilities if they publish on the 'Net: grammar, intelligent writing, quality of work. They do not have the responsibility to be prolific.

*grinding teeth*

It's two AM and time for me to close up shop for the night. Sorry about the rant.
