Today marks the anniversary of the 1973 Athens Polytechnic uprising, which basically was the beginning of the end of the junta that had taken power in 1967.

The modern tradition involves remembrances (there was violent reaction from junta forces), and a march from the Polytechnic Institute to the US embassy (the US supported the junta; not our finest hour by a long shot). Given what's happened in marches earlier this year, the cops are on high alert, and metro stations along the march route are closing down.

My office is right smack in the middle of town, right between two streets used as primary protest march routes ... and less than two blocks away from the fatal bank fire from the May riot. So word came down from the senior partners about noon-ish: Unless you're working on something critical that you can't take with you and work on from home, you should be out of the office by one o'clock for your own safety.

Then about two minutes later: On second thought, there's nothing important enough to keep any of you in the office past one o'clock.

So here I am. Out of the workplace danger zone, but one block from the main march route to the US embassy. Looks like I'm gonna be a shut-in today.

::hugs:: The one good thing is that your senior partners seem to care enough about their people to get them out of danger.

Head down, away from windows, good DVDs?

It's nice to know that somewhere, there's law firms where leaders have common sense.

(Some of our guys in DC (a) wouldn't let us leave on 9/11 and (b) had to be herded out of the building by armed ATF agents who were securing Zone 1. I left anyway, but heard all about the "arguing with men with guns" later...)

Glad you're out safe & indoors!
