A lot of people write a lot of fic. Some people write fics that are even long enough to warrant their own chapter titles within the fic. So in the spirit of the fic title meme that came by way of [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63, I'm putting together ... well, call it a chapter name meme.

The only fic I have that qualifies is the old reliable "Scarab". So, to get the ball rolling, I'm gonna chapter-meme it. (Am I using the term "meme" right?)

One: Gate Crasher
Obvious. Somebody just crashed the party.

Two: Depression, Anger, and a River in Egypt
Three of the five stages of grief - er, with the obvious pun on denial, because that river in Egypt is kinda relevant...

Three: Close Encounter
From Spielberg's movie. The one with Richard Dreyfuss and the flying saucers and the aliens. Because, well...

Four: Ancient Truths
Facts begin to emerge from the ancient times. Nothing too clever.

Five: Modern Secrets
Complement to Chapter Four. One of the things I wanted to make sure of was that both sides keep holding secrets back. This chapter is largely about which secrets get revealed and which remain hidden.

Six: One Girl in All the Worlds
From the mantra of the Slayer, except with a little extra spin on it. After all, there may have been delays in the calling of a Slayer, which might be explained by a Slayer being called ... well ... somewhere else.

Seven: Plan "A"
The simple, straightforward, by-the-numbers plan that will defeat the Big Bad with no muss, no fuss, no need for antacid. This being drama, you know what happens to that plan.

Eight: If at First...
...you don't succeed... either try again, think of something else, or throw in the towel.

Nine: Contingency Planning
Another straightforward descriptive title.

Ten: Forward, the Light Brigade
From Tennyson, the order given to launch the Charge of the Light Brigade. For those who don't know the story, the Charge of the Light Brigade took place in the Crimean War; Tennyson makes it sound like the height of nobility, of bravery. Point of fact, the Light Brigade got basically cut to shreds.

Eleven: Worst-Case Scenario
Another self-explanatory one, and something any planner should have in the back of his mind: what do you do if absolutely everything goes wrong?

Twelve: Live Free or Die
The state motto of New Hampshire. I used it to represent a certain character's choice.

Thirteen: The Whites of Their Eyes
I struggled for a while with what to do for this one. I finally settled on the order at the Battle of Bunker Hill, because of the nature of the final fight ... and also, it makes a pun, based on what a snake-head's eyes do.

Epilogue: The Serpent and the Hunter
Many SG-1 episodes have "Serpent" in their title, referring to the Serpent Lord Apophis, who I wanted to raise as a specter, a figure of concern. And the "Hunter," in this case, is the Slayer.

Submitted for your consideration, for what little it's worth.

Crashing now ... goodnight, all.
