Interests:
Downhill Skiing
Took it up my first year of college; this was in New Hampshire, in among the White Mountans and Vermont's Green Mountains. Found it exhilirating, especially a couple of times when a bunch of us went out to Stowe. I've tried to pick it up since, only to discover that my knees aren't as sturdy as they used to be.
Nero Wolfe
Haven't read them all, not even close, but the Nero Wolfe novels struck a chord with me. The little bits of philosophy, the way the entire series seemed to start in media res, fully formed without a seventh of a ton of plot exposition. Intelligent stuff.
Walking
Most common form of exercise I indulge in; at the moment, whether I'm in New York or Athens, it's also often the best way to get from Point A to Point B. (In the Greek islands, it's also very nice, especially since there are some very picturesque Points B around.)

The reference is to the Hitchhiker's Guide, and often it seems to fit Joe Torre. Stoic, calm. Been manager of the New York Yankees for eleven years now; used to be, that job had a life expectancy of a Star Trek extra in a red shirt. (When he was hired, the papers called him "Clueless Joe"; four championships later, well, not so much.)

There was this one moment on The Daily Show when it all seemed to come together. The Secretary of State testified to Congress that there had been a briefing paper about the intentions of Al-Qaeda in the summer of 2001; she said that the paper had been largely "historical" in nature. When asked for the title of the paper, she responded: "Bin Laden Determined To Attack Inside United States." When the camera cut back to Jon Stewart, he simply sat there for at least fifteen seconds like someone had hit him in the forehead with a rock, then responded with the quote in the icon. Raise your hand if you've never felt the same way...
