Nuts and bolts
Apr. 17th, 2006 06:07 pmThe moving-in process continues. All sorts of little things have to be done to change a new space from a warehouse into a home; many bookshelves must be installed, so that books can come out of unsightly and heavy boxes; food must go into the refrigerator, for one cannot survive on takeout food alone; and things must go up on the walls, as floor and desk space are at a premium in a New York apartment.
My computer (which doubles as my TV) is set up now, after the last stage of the complicated process: putting a wall bracket up to hold my monitor. This involved drilling some seriously large holes in the wall for the bracket, and mounting it in place with something the building's carpenter called "toggle bolts". Turns out these are fairly common items, especially for people who need to mount things on walls that are basically just drywall or Sheetrock or plasterboard; but the whole time I was searching for the right size of toggle bolt, my brain kept on looking for self-sealing stem bolts.
Ah-yup. Can ya tell I watched a whole lot of Star Trek when I was a kid?
