If I were to hash up an icon with an American flag and the caption "I want to believe" ... would the message make sense to people?

While it would have a message that the Flag may no symbolize what you want it to, or rather, you are not happy with the way people are living up to it, you might want to list specific beliefs or concepts. It means different things to different people.

Dunno if that's what you want to get across though!
