International Recommend-A-Movie Day. This means everyone should go to their LJ right now and tell their friends to watch a really good movie which most of them probably have not seen. The Shawshank Redemption: OK, maybe not that obscure, but still, in my mind, one of the Great Movies. I've shown the DVD to friends and they've been absolutely blown away. Even if you dislike the concept of a prison movie, this one is worthwhile; my own mother recoiled from it just from the "prison movie" tag, and ended up loving it. Citizen X -- Made-for-HBO movie about one of the ... well, ostensibly, it's about the hunt for the worst serial killer the Soviet Union had ever known, but in large part, the hunt is just part of the larger context of the evolution of an investigator, a bureaucrat, and the Soviet state itself as the Communist regime lost its stranglehold on power. Stephen Rea, Donald Sutherland. It even has moments where it's funny, and the humor is believable and natural.

Forbidden Planet -- one of the first true sci-fi classics, sometimes called the spiritual father of Star Trek, and if you can get past the 1950's attitudes and sometimes cheesy (though not nearly as cheesy as most of the sci-fi of the 1950's) dialogue, you're in for a real treat...
