In reference to this discussion, I came up with what might be a philosophical principle:

Any philosophy that requires an Enemy of some sort in order to function is fatally flawed.

I read Heinlein's Starship Troopers, and could see a society like that coming apart in the absence of an Enemy. After all, what would a warrior culture do if there were no enemies to fight?
