Grind

Working again, if only on temporary basis. Got a three-day gig. Got in bang on time, had to wait for someone to come find me. Was sat down at a borrowed computer, job was explained, but they went to find a Web URL where I'd find the data I had to put into a database ... and forgot about me. Someone saw me twiddling my thumbs and waiting and finally came up with what I needed to get started.

There's gotta be a Dilbert strip or something in there somewhere. "The Forgotten Temp."

And I need to complain about whoever had this computer before I did. Not about it being six hardware generations behind the times and dog-slow, because that's not his fault. But the keyboard is so grimy and stiff, the keys so sticky, that I think I'm gonna have carpal tunnel before the end of the day. I have *never* had that kind of thing. There's shredded paper, sticky stuff I don't even want to identify, paper clips in the mechanism. I can't just touch-type; I've got to lever the keys down.

And you don't realize how much easier a mouse wheel makes things until you have to do without one.

I hate Mondays...

Decision

This job is now officially BYOK. Er, that's Bring Your Own Keyboard.

Make that unofficially. 'Cos I'm not clearing it with anyone; I'm just doing it. I'm bringing in my own keyboard, and I'm plugging it into the back of this relic at work.

Beats carpal tunnel, I figure.
