From, lessee ... [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 and [livejournal.com profile] celli...

X-Files/Matrix crossover I promised to [livejournal.com profile] yahtzee63 a long time ago, and am still trying to put together. Working title: "Error Correcting Code"

===

"You realize, don't you, that he has a purpose, just as you do?"

"Irrelevant."

"All our resources must be used to find the renegades."

"The continued existence of the system demands it."

"You still don't understand, do you? If he is lost, then the continued existence of the system is imperiled no matter what you do. You treat the people around you as expendable resources, caring nothing for the destruction you leave in your wake as you pursue your ends."

"It does not matter."

"If we fail, the renegades will destroy everything."

"If by using him we can stop them, nothing else matters."

"And if an error appears in the system? One that he won't find if you throw him away on your quest? What happens to the system then?"

"The system must survive."

"It has always survived."

"We have never failed."

"Or maybe it's failed before and you just don't know it. Have you ever considered that possibility?"

"..."

"..."

"..."

"I thought not."

"It is not your decision, old man."

"We are responsible for protecting the system."

"We have jurisdiction."

"For now."

The chasm between the two buildings looked far too wide to jump-

Your mind's playing tricks on you. She just jumped it. You can, too.

Before the following patrolmen could shout a warning, she had jumped, and before common sense could protest that she'd never make it, she was across, light on her feet, running to catch up with the other woman.

Cordy had once boasted that she had the most effective home-security system in Los Angeles. Wesley had snapped back that someone had to die in order to make her cozy arrangement possible.

Crashing off the rush of fear, fumbling for his key, Angel was suddenly glad that Dennis Pierson had decided to stick around.

The door to Cordelia's apartment popped open, allowing Angel entry; as he scrambled in, the door closed firmly and the dead-bolts snapped.

"Thanks, Dennis. Where's Cordy? Wesley?"

No answer.

"Dennis, I have to get in touch with them. We've got trouble. Big trouble."

Silence; the murmur of the TV that Cordy had probably left on to deter burglars suddenly snapped off, and the apartment's cordless phone flipped end over end to Angel. He grabbed it and noted, without too much surprise, that it was already dialed and ringing.

"Hello?"

"Cordy? Where are you?"

"On my way back home. We've got a problem."

"You've seen it?"

"Yeah, and it was lucky that I did, too."

"Lucky?!?"

"Oh yeah," Cordy shot back over the connection. "If I hadn't been walking right by him, I wouldn't even have seen him coming until it was too late."

"My God, Cordy, how could you have missed him?"

"Lessee, he couldn't have been more than five-ten, and the only way he stood out was that he was a little too scruffy and too warmly dressed for L.A."

Angel frowned. "Huh?"

"We *are* talking about the Invisible Man, right?"

"Huh?" Angel was so puzzled that he had lost track of everything.

Which is why he jumped when Cordy's voice came from over his shoulder. "Five-ten--"

"Jesus!"

"--blonde short hair, deep brown eyes, can turn invisible in the blink of an eye, somehow connected to Wolfram and Hart. You can come down off the ceiling now, Angel." She snapped the cell phone closed.

"That's not what I was talking about."

"You think that an invisible assassin isn't worth talking about?"

"I was worrying about the eight-foot-tall fire-breathing demon that ran into me in the sewers and asked where Wesley was."

From an untitled Firefly WIP:

===

"Worse is coming, holy man. Horrors are coming. They tried to destroy you on the Earth that was, and they'll come out to find you here."

"Earth is dead. There's nothing left of Earth."

"Nothing human can live on Earth any more, Shepherd. But Earth is still there, and there are things that can live where humans can't..."
