Winter in New Jersey
Dec. 5th, 2003 12:38 pmCreative juices have run dry, or so I thought. Maybe they froze instead.
Temperature's down below freezing in the afternoon now, and snow is now coming down like it's making up for lost time. Could be interesting ... and in any case, I'm suddenly glad the family invested in a snow-blower. (And bought it when it was still shirtsleeve weather, natch.)
I've seen snow like this in New Hampshire, and in the District of Columbia.
In DC, in January 1994, one inch of snow did so much damage that the entire U.S. government was shut down for a week. I'm not kidding. The Russian navy could have sailed up the Potomac and they wouldn't have gotten a coherent reaction.
In New Hampshire, this much snow on a December afternoon would leave people pondering the age-old question:
"So when does the snow start?"
Close entry.

Date: 2003-12-05 09:53 am (UTC)Eeyuck, I remember that winter... had a layer of ice, several inches snow (I was a bit north of DC), and then an inch-thick layer of ice on top of that snow. The ice is what did it. I remember some of the younger kids in my neighborhood I was trying to watch would walk on top of the ice crust on the snow and freak me out for fear it would crack. (I also vividly remember trying to chase down and catch my charges' hyperactive dog in that mess. Interesting, to say the least.)
But yes, the thought of snow in Maryland/DC causes unnecessary panic. I went into the grocery store last night only to walk out five minutes later because the insane snow panic lines were not worth waiting in for milk.
