Wildfires

So from watching the news, it appears that the wildfires in the outskirts of Athens are getting pretty bad, threatening the outer suburbs. Smoke was visible over the hills when I was coming back home from an errand by bus yesterday; I mistook it for a nasty storm cloud.

Frightening for everyone who's outside the city, I know. But I'm centrally located - and by "centrally", I mean that I can walk at a stroll to the Parliament building or the various embassies. So for the fires to be bad enough to put me at risk, the reports hitting the world media would more likely be on the order of "OMGWTFBBQ city in flames government evacuating ancient ruins ablaze" or something like that...

and presumably before such dramatic headlines made it to us, you'd have felt the flames licking at your heels and taken flight.

*Phew!* I was watching some of the OMGWTF ATHENS ABLAZE!!!! footage on the US Media over the weekend, and they did have a tendency to make it sound like the Parthenon was about to be engulfed. Very glad that it's NOT the case, and that you're safe.
