Nuts and bolts

The moving-in process continues. All sorts of little things have to be done to change a new space from a warehouse into a home; many bookshelves must be installed, so that books can come out of unsightly and heavy boxes; food must go into the refrigerator, for one cannot survive on takeout food alone; and things must go up on the walls, as floor and desk space are at a premium in a New York apartment.

My computer (which doubles as my TV) is set up now, after the last stage of the complicated process: putting a wall bracket up to hold my monitor. This involved drilling some seriously large holes in the wall for the bracket, and mounting it in place with something the building's carpenter called "toggle bolts". Turns out these are fairly common items, especially for people who need to mount things on walls that are basically just drywall or Sheetrock or plasterboard; but the whole time I was searching for the right size of toggle bolt, my brain kept on looking for self-sealing stem bolts.

Ah-yup. Can ya tell I watched a whole lot of Star Trek when I was a kid?

Toggle Bolts

Toggle bolts are our friend, as are Molly-Bolts.

If you're setting up a bunch, or even one, of bookshelves; remember to fasten them to the wall with 'L' brackets and some serious screws into studs. Those things can tip over, and will choose to at the worst possible time.

One of the great joys from our last move (which we've done way too many of)
was unpacking the 25 boxes of books that had been packed away for a decade. This is the first time I've had all the SciFi and Fantasy out at the same time. The downside was sorting all of that out and getting it onto all of the shelves. The continuing problem is expanding the space for tthe endless additons. ('Hello. My name is Joe and I'm a book addict')
