Weird things, preconceptions.

Until today, if someone uttered the name "Max Schmeling", the image that would have come into my mind was Nazi Germany.

That all changed when I read his obituary and found out that he a) refused to join the Nazi party, b) gave sanctuary to targeted Jews during Kristallnacht, c) went on record as being "almost happy I lost that fight [to Joe Louis for the heavyweight championship in 1938]"; d) became a friend and financial benefactor of Joe Louis, whom all the propagandists would have categorized as his blood nemesis.

"By threir fruits shall you know them."

Wow. And all this from a guy whose profession almost invariably causes some form of brain damage.

It's good that people can still surprise us in the good way.
