My guess would be it's reading the first six digits (or however many -- once they started using letters, it probably wasn't hexadecimal any more) as values, and defining the color by that.

You're kind of a mint green on my monitor. ;-)

Also, sometimes you can type font color=red and get the color you've typed, so it might be doing that (in a 'this word is closest to that color word' fashion) sometimes.

I looked at this post in Internet Explorer (Mac OSX version) and your original post was purple, and my "grey" text above was black.

...go figure.
