Checklist

Things done today:

Bought a bed and carted it home.  Damn thing weighs two hundred fifty pounds.

Proved once again that I have a talent for calling people on the phone at the worst possible time.

Realized that there's a very useful metaphor in fanfic during a discussion with [livejournal.com profile] neonhummingbird:

If the Vorkosigan Saga books began with a Star Trek fanfic that had to have its serial numbers filed off ... well, it wasn't just filing off the serial numbers, but a new engine had to be dropped into the chassis. Maybe some body work as well.

Then the metaphor extended: I remember reading about a car called the Studillac, a Studebaker with a Cadillac engine dropped in. (Reference here.) Working the metaphor, that's what a crossover would be. ("The Scarab" as a Studillac. I like this metaphor.)

Then you get the funny cars with the sparks and flames coming out the rear, maybe the wacky articulated suspensions: according to Perri, that'd be crackfic. Your average Star Trek novel would be an off-the-assembly line car. Perhaps a Crown Vic (though with the quality of a lot of the ST novels out there, a Pinto might be more appropriate).

Anyone care to add to the insanity?
