Comments on Jake 2.0, and on Galactica
Realpolitik is something that the James Bond movies never covered - I mean, how many times was James Bond the villain? J2.0 seems to be a lot more daring on that score - Jake's conscience and his orders have never come in complete conflict; he's always found another way out or had one given to him, somehow or other, but ... something tells me that if his conscience won't let him continue, the NSA won't let him leave. Y'know, something about Uncle Sam owning the tiny tiny robots?
Gotta admit one thing - I'd been sort of swearing off TV until I decided for the heck of it to record Battlestar Galactica. Now, my memories of the original are very fuzzy, and I couldn't quite call myself a fan - OK, when I was a very young kid, I had one or another of the Galactica toys, but then, I was, what? Eight? Nine years old? I think I may have seen six episodes, tops, including the pilot.
Now, I'm older, more mature, and seeing that the premise has also matured ... y'know what? I like it. Of course, they could screw it up as badly as Voyager got screwed up, but there's potential there. Lots of it. Edward James Olmos impressed the hell out of me. Starbuck as a lady ... I'm okay with it. I remember Dirk Benedict more for Face than Starbuck anyway (and for a coupla years I kept getting him crossed up with Scott Bakula - something in the face, I suppose), and if they'd kept the part as male, it'd be like they were recasting Captain Kirk or Luke Skywalker. This way, the lady gets the chance to make the role her own.
This ... this could work. But am I the only one who saw Baltar and was thinking of Wesley Wyndham-Price? (Had to use the full name; "Wesley" could be taken entirely the wrong way in a sci-fi context.)
